HEC-DSSVue - HEC Data Storage System Visual Utility Engine

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hydrologic Engineering Center Data Storage System, or HEC-DSS, is a database system designed to efficiently store and retrieve scientific data that is typically sequential. Such data types include, but are not limited to, time series data, curve data, spatial-oriented gridded data, and others. The system was designed to make it easy for users and application programs to retrieve and store data. HEC-DSSVue is a graphical user interface program for viewing, editing, and manipulating data in HEC-DSS database files.

Capabilities

HEC-DSSVue is a Java-based visual utilities program that allows users to plot, tabulate, edit, and manipulate data in a HEC-DSS database file. The graphics produced by HEC-DSSVue are highly customizable and can be saved in various formats, including “jpeg” and “png” (portable network graphics), or for printing or copying to the clipboard for inclusion in reports. HEC-DSSVue incorporates over fifty mathematical functions that were available in the DSSMATH program. Along with these functions, HEC-DSSVue provides several utility functions that provide a means to enter data sets into a database, rename data set names, copy data sets to other HEC-DSS database files, and delete data sets.

.

Operation and Operating Systems

Data sets are selected from a sorted / filtered list of pathnames in a HEC-DSS database file using a mouse. HEC-DSSVue also incorporates the “Jython” standard scripting language, which allows one to specify a routine sequence of steps in a text format, and then execute the sequence from a user-defined button or from a “batch” process. HEC-DSSVue was written using the Java programming language, which allows it to be run under a variety of different operating systems. Fully supported Microsoft systems include Windows 98 / ME / NT / 2000 and XP.

New DSSVue Plug-Ins

A “plug-in” capability has been added  to version 1.2 that allows user implemented code to directly access the functionality of HEC-DSSVue. A plug-in is a set of Java software that is compiled and put into a Java “.jar” file. By simply placing this file into the HEC-DSSVue Plugins directory, it is automatically loaded and accessible from the HEC-DSSVue program. Typical uses for plug-ins are: complex mathematical operations; specialized formatting of data for entry into another application (such as a program that uses a “card format”); and, retrieval of data from a web site. Current publicly available plug-ins include a USGS data retrieval plug-in and California Data Exchange Center (CDEC) data retrieval plug-in.

Documentation

The HEC-DSSVue files contain the program in its entirety, including a sample DSS file and documentation. The HEC-DSSVue User's Manual, in the form of Adobe Acrobat PDF files, is included in the program setup. The Adobe Acrobat files require version 5.0 or higher of the Acrobat reader for viewing. Availability

The HEC-DSSVue program is not available individually, but is included for FREE on any of the following WRCS CDs:
The WRCS H&H Software Suite, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HEC-Combo Pack
or HEC-Works .
