AquaDyn

AquaDyn is a powerful and easy to use hydrodynamic simulation package essential for water resources engineering studies, risk assessment, and impact studies. AquaDyn allows the complete description and analysis of hydrodynamic conditions (e.g., flow rates and water levels) of open channels such as rivers, lakes, or estuaries. Engineers, specialists, and decision-makers can use the specialized modules of the simulation package to predict impacts on water flow conditions caused by projects. For instance, AquaDyn provides a reliable way to forecast the consequences of different activities such as dredging or building dikes, bridges piers, and embankments. AquaDyn can be used to model steady and unsteady flows in supercritical as well as sub-critical conditions and therefore permits to take into account and study the effects of weirs, contractions, and tidal waves.

Methods

AquaDyn simulates the flow of the open channel by solving the 2 dimensional shallow water equations using the finite element method. It takes into account the Bed Elevation of the water course, water friction with the Bed, Wind stress, Gravity force, Coriolis force, turbulence dissipation and the complex geometry of the open channel.

Complete Integrated environment for Surface Water Modeling

  • Input parameters and solution available in a single project file
  • A simulation can be restarted, modified and visualized at a later time by simply loading one project file
  • Export and Import ASCII file for compatibility with other software
  • Pre-processor, Post-processor and the solver integrated in one executable: no need to transfer data file from one program to another one
  • Fully menu driven
  • Complete On line help and Manual
  • Visualization of several windows simultaneously containing:
    • results from different simulations or same simulation at different times with different parameters
    • Copy Paste in other text document, print to Laser Color or other printers
    • Each window has Zoom capabilities and allows length and area measurements.

Input Editors

  • Mesh generation tools
  • Mesh refinement reflected in the Bed Elevation
  • Editor to enter the Bed Elevation, Manning, Wind, Boundary Conditions and Initial State, etc.
  • Undo last Edition change.

Visualization

Visualize any parameter in a specific window at a particular time in the form of:

  • Isovalue, Contour line, Section, Discharge along section, Time Curves, Speed arrows.

The parameters include:

  • Bed Elevation, Water Height and Water Depth, Water velocities, Wind Velocities, Manning and Strickler Coefficient, Energy Line, Critical Line, Peclet Number.

Simulation

Complete control over the simulation process:

  • Follow up of the convergence process and time evolution through graphics or tables
  • Simulation can be stopped at any time and continue from the stop point
  • Visualization of the current result up to now; change any of the input parameter (e.g., Bed Elevation, Boundary Condition) and then continue
  • Fast steady state solver (unique feature) over Newton-Raphson iteration offering quadratic converge (the error on the solution can decrease as much as by a factor 100 after each iteration).

AquaDyn runs on Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000.
